If you're looking for the ultimate special weekend break for that very special someone, this terrific-value Omega deal ought to be top of your list.

Everyone loves Venice, arguably the strangest and most beautiful city ever created. Dazzling by day and eerily supernatural by night, the city has as many faces as Carnival masks and they're all bewitching. And never more so than in autumn and winter, after the summer crowds and the scorching heat have departed, and serenity comes to La Serenissima.

At night, away from the squares, Venice is sparsely-lit and its labyrinthine passages medievally dark. The sense of history is overpowering. There is nothing so brash or modern as an Ibiza-style club scene, or malls or fast-food chains. But there are restaurants and plays and classical concerts, and traces of Monteverdi or Vivaldi often grace the night air.

Dawn at this time of year is especially evocative, when the canal mists rise like wraiths among shadowy, 800 year old palazzi and the only sound is the gentle slap of water on stone. The streets are deserted, but on the waterfront of the Grand Canal, yawning gondoliers idly chat with fishermen, and market traders walk the quayside inspecting the morning catch. It's a fleeting, secret Venice that you have to get up early, or stay up late for.

Not surprisingly, hotel prices can be astronomical, and accommodation often means staying somewhere on the mainland or in the outer islands, which is frustrating because you miss the chance to experience the city 'out of hours' when the ferries and buses aren't running. But not on this break.

The furthest away you'll be is the rooftop terrace bar, as you drink cocktails at the 4 star Carlton Hotel on the Grand Canal itself, just 15 minutes' walk from the Rialto. That's the best way to experience Venice - 24 hours a day, perfect, unforgettable, with just a dash of Omega magic.

Please note that as there are many bridges with steps this tour may not be suitable for people with limited mobility.

Day 1  Check in at your chosen airport for your flight to Venice Marco Polo or Venice Treviso, where on arrival we will transfer you directly to the Piazzale Roma. From there it's a very pleasant 3–minute stroll over a bridge and along the bank of the Grand Canal to the 4 star Hotel Carlton. Once you've checked in you're free to start exploring Venice and find a nice place to have dinner. A large street map wouldn't be a bad idea, as Venice is a delightful warren and it's easy to get lost.

Day 2  Breakfast and then the first of your two full days. You'll need them too, because there is a lot to see. Gondola rides are expensive (€100 per ½ hour at 2017 prices), and walking or vaporetto waterbus are the best ways to go (see vaporetto rates below). You won't miss the landmarks like the Rialto, the Bridge of Sighs, the Basilica and pigeon–populated St Mark's Square, but don't overlook the churches. Venice is haunted by dark memories of wars and plagues, commemorated both in its macabre annual Carnivale and its grand churches. On an island across the Grand Canal is probably Venice's most emblematic church, the San Giorgio Maggiore, rebuilt by the great Andrea Palladio and marbled throughout, with on every wall enormous canvasses by Tintoretto. Its campanile (bell tower) gives one of the best views in the city.

Day 3 You can roam the city again and perhaps visit the Doge's Palace, or take a vaporetto out to the Lido or the islands of Giudecca and Murano, where the glass comes from. If you like boats, try the Maritime Museum in the Arsenale district, or if paintings are your thing, there's the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Dorsoduro with 20 rooms full of works by Veronese, Tiepolo, Bellini, Canaletto and Giorgione. But you could just browse the boutiques instead, which are packed with Prada and Louis Vuitton, or treat yourself to a souvenir from the shops on the Rialto bridge.

Day 4  Breakfast in the hotel. We retrace our steps to the Piazzale Roma for the airport taxi and your flight home.

What's On in Venice

As you'd expect, there's a full programme of arts and cultural events going on throughout the year, including concerts, opera and exhibitions. Check out the latest in Live Venice, a free dual–language newspaper available at most hotels, or visit Live Venice online.

Vaporetto rates (2017)

Walking can become tiring, especially when it's so easy to get lost in the maze, and water taxis and gondolas are expensive, but you can get a waterbus (vaporetto) to practically anywhere in and around Venice, Murano, Burano, Lido, Torcello and Mestre (not airports) for much less. A single ticket is €7 and is valid for 45 minutes from the moment you activate it, meaning you can use it on more than one bus during that time. Day rates are better value of course:

  • 1 day (any ACTV service anywhere*, within 24 hours of activation) – €20
  • 2 days (48 hours) – €30
  • 3 days (72 hours) – €40

*Except the outlying 16 and 19 lines. Alilaguna boats are a different company and not included in the ticket.

Here are some example hotels or similar ones that we use for this break, actual availability may change with the travel date you choose.

Some hotels have an additional supplement per person, as shown below. Supplements are stated for the break (not per night)
