Join us on this sun–kissed holiday to the crown jewel of Italy's Amalfi coast, the town of Amalfi itself.

Its dramatic setting below steep cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea has made it a popular tourist resort.

As you stroll through the sun–filled piazzas and little streets it's hard to believe that, back in the Middle Ages, this town was a powerful maritime Republic, even before Pisa, Venice and Genoa came to prominence.

The Sant'Andrea (Saint Andrew's) cathedral in the heart of town, with its striped Byzantine facade, survives from this era.

These Republics built fleets of ships, both for their own protection and for trading purposes, and Amalfi's medieval shipyard can still be seen today as the Museo Arsenale, documenting the town's maritime history.

For a change of scene there are interesting excursions included in your holiday, and the equally well–known towns of Positano and Ravello are within an hour's journey by local bus, but perhaps one of the best ways to enjoy Amalfi is to sit at a pavement café, a glass of Limoncello in hand, simply watching the world go by...

Friday  Check in at the airport for your flight to Naples. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Amalfi by coach. Please note that there is a 3 to 4–minute walk from Naples airport building to the coach park. Once at the hotel, the rest of the day and evening is free to get settled in and enjoy dinner. Passengers on later flights will arrive at the hotel after dinner service, and will be offered a cold platter instead.

Saturday  After breakfast there will be a Welcome Meeting at the hotel where our representative will tell you about the local area and assist you in booking any additional excursions you may wish to take. The rest of the day is then at leisure.

Sunday  Amalfi & boat tour

Today you can see Amalfi from a different perspective - from the sea! Join your private motorboat at Amalfi pier then, thanks to your expert guide, you will learn all the secrets of the Amalfi Coast and enjoy the stunning views of the rocky coastline as the cliffs appear to tumble down into the blue, blue sea. You can make an optional visit to the Emerald Grotto*, weather permitting, to take a look at the beautiful rock formations if you wish. Disembark back in Amalfi for a guided tour of this ancient maritime Republic where you will visit the historical centre and the Paradise Cloister together with the medieval Sant'Andrea Cathedral (admission charge approx. €3pp).

*Extra charge to visit the Emerald Grotto – €5 per person. The visit involves a transfer to a smaller boat.

Monday  Paestum & Mozzarella

Breakfast first at the hotel, then a full–day visit to Paestum, about 1.5–2 hours south of Amalfi in the Cilento region. Our first stop on the way is at a buffalo farm where you will see the complete process of making mozzarella cheese by hand from buffalo milk, and even get to taste some too – a particular specialty of the region. We then carry on to the archaeological site of the ancient Greek city of Paestum, originally called Poseidonia in honour of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. This ancient site is set about a mile inland in a grassy field surrounded by gardens and hills, and still has some of the original paved roads, city walls and amphitheatre, but is particularly famed for the well–preserved ruins of three Greek temples dating from about 600 to 450 BC. There's an exceptional little museum, too, displaying archaeological finds from the area. There'll be some free time in the middle of the day for lunch (not included), and the tour returns to Amalfi in the afternoon.

Tuesday  Herculaneum & Sorrento

Today's treat is a fabulous full–day tour combining a guided visit to the Roman excavations at Herculaneum, an exploration of Sorrento's old town, and a drive along the Amalfi coastline, one of the world's most picturesque routes. We set off in the morning and drive first to Herculaneum, a residential town buried in ashes by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., and still being excavated today. After your 2–hour guided tour we head for Sorrento, with a visit to an inlaid wood–work shop included en route, a craft typical of the Sorrento area. You'll be able to find a nice place for lunch and still have time to explore the ancient, narrow lanes of the old town and see some of Sorrento's most famous architectural gems, including the 14th–century Cloister of San Francesco. On leaving Sorrento the drive back to Amalfi takes you along the untamed beauty of the Amalfi Coast, through the picturesque villages of Conca dei Marini, Furore and Praiano, with a photo–stop at the famous Belvedere in Positano for breathtaking views over the coastline and sea. The excursion arrives back in Amalfi in the late afternoon.

Wednesday & Thursday  Two free days at leisure in your resort.

Friday  Breakfast at the hotel, then at the appropriate time you will unfortunately have to say 'arrivederci' to Amalfi as we transfer you to Naples airport for your flight home.
